Sex in Japan and the Knights in Shining Armor

The internet is filled with tales and testimonies of sexual exploits not only in Japan, Thailand and the Philippines, but in a number of other far flung destinations throughout the Far East and beyond. To many, the mere mention of “Asia” conjures up images of sex tours, exotic romances and mail order brides.

Like most stereotypes, there is a certain truth to this perception.

In Thailand, in particular, a country overrun by more dudes in blue jeans than one can imagine, it is also a land that caters to the chronically lonely and unattached.  In fact, older and even physically challenged men seeking intimacy from a young and accepting companion - often thirty years his junior - can hardly go wrong in the “land of a thousand smiles.”

Moreover, these same gents, rejected by woman in their home country, due to either a lack of suave, money, or a trim waste line, arrive to welcoming arms in places like China, Cambodia and throughout Vietnam.

The trade off, many might rightfully argue, is that these woman are desperate; compelled to act due to the hopelessness of their situation, extreme poverty or both.    Yet many Asian woman, influenced by Western culture, are driven away from Asian men who consider chivalry little more than an absurd concept.

“Thai men treat their woman like shit.” said one waitress on a recent trip to Bangkok.  “We want to marry a gentleman.”

In Japan, too, Japanese men are said to be too bashful or shy to sweep a woman off her feet, paving the way for a Knight in Shining Armor to rescue the day.

Not surprisingly, Western men long for a relationship where the women is barefoot, pregnant and culturally subservient; catering to his whim as if he were king, a repugnant notion to most woman back home.

Never-the-less, these factors, plus many more, continue to allure Western men to the region in endless droves.  Life in Asia may not be for everyone, but there are lessons to be learned on both sides of the cultural divide here -  and across the Pacific Ocean as well.

See you when I get back!
